SHILLONG, Aug 1: Phomless Lyttan, who has entertained music lovers since the 1970’s, passed away on July 30 leaving behind a host of heartbroken admirers. He was one of Shillong’s old guards as far as the music scene is concerned. Known as the Elvis Presley of the Northeast, Bah Phom, as he is affectionately called, was a singer with some of Shillong’s best known bands.
On hearing of his demise, music lovers of Shillong expressed their sadness. A fan of his said, “True that Bah Phom has not been singing in the last few years but we remember his unique singing style and his ability to sing Elvis Presley numbers. He will be hugely missed.”
Similar sentiments were echoed by many of his fans.
An amiable person but never short on humour, Bah Phom would make the audience laugh even while he sang and entertained them.
Bah Phom leaves behind his wife Berlin Mawthoh. His son Barry Mawthoh, who is with Meghalaya Police, is also a singer with the band Colours. His funeral service will be held at his residence at Sharing Lum Laitkor, Nongdaneng, at 1 pm on August 2, after which he will be laid to rest at Lawmali cemetery.
