SHILLONG, Aug 2: In an abrupt U-turn, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Jagdish Chelani has denied reports circulating in a section of the media and clarified that he never rejected the statements made by the Director-General of Police about the nature and the scope of the violent incident.
“The undersigned will like to state that the police investigation and the magisterial inquiry ordered in the aftermath of the July 24 mob violence at Tura will bring the evidence to the fore about the premeditated attempt or a conspiracy to harm the Chief Minister that day when a mob engaged in stone-pelting and arson while discussions were under way between the CM and the representatives of the pressure groups inside the CM’s Secretariat at Tura,” the DC said in a statement on Wednesday.
He said preliminary information reveals that a set of elements instigated the mob with ulterior motives to cause unrest, harm and violence.
Referring to his previous statement where he had denied any attempt to the CM’s life, the DC said, “The recorded statement was made in a different context as was understood at the time. Any misunderstanding in this regard is unintentional.”
