TURA, Aug 3: The Garo Hills Environmental Protection Society (GHEPS) on Wednesday conducted its 5th environmental awareness programme in Chokpot at the conference hall of the farmers’ market building. The programme featured discussions on safeguarding the environment and its natural resources.
Deputy CEM of GHADC, Nikman Ch Marak, who was the chief guest, spoke on the importance of environmental preservation. He also informed the participants about the rules and regulations laid down by the GHADC for environmental management in the region.
Others who spoke at the programme included SDPO Chokpot, John Clitzter A Sangma, who spoke on the topic ‘Law and Order in the management of environment’, president of Achik Baptist Krima, Groswell Sangma, also delivered a speech on the topic ‘Environmental ethics and religion’, while Rev Father Salnesh D Sangma, Parish Priest of Chokpot, spoke on ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’.
However, former GHADC CEM, PK Sangma, in his speech, shed light on the relationship between humans and the environment.
Hosted by leaders and members of the A’chik Baptist Krima, the programme was organised by secretary of GHEPS, Walnath N Sangma, where prominent political leaders, government officers, social leaders, Nokmas, church leaders, teachers and students of various schools attended the function.
Participants of the programme also took a pledge in preserving and protecting the environment.
A prayer was also was offered in regard with the recent happenings in Tura as well as in Manipur.
