SHILLONG, Aug 4: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and his counterpart from Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, are likely to conduct a joint visit to Block-I areas after Independence Day, August 15.
The statement came from him as he was reacting to instances of reported law and order issues in these areas.
It may be recalled that the Jaintia Students’ Union had on Thursday shot off a petition to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma asking the government to identify and apprehend members of a purported new insurgent group responsible for threatening Khasi-Pnar people residing in the border areas.
Sangma said that the Meghalaya government has already taken up the matter with Assam, and the CMs are having a series of meeting on the issues and incidents reported recently. “We are ironing out these issues and some concerns have come up regarding some check gate in Khanduli area and Assam has said they will resolve the issue,” he added.
‘Can’t deploy police in Block-I’
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home, Prestone Tynsong on Friday said Meghalaya cannot deploy police in Block-I areas since it is under the administrative control of Assam.
“Block-I is under the administrative control of Assam. How can we deploy Meghalaya Police? …our Chief Minister will talk to Assam CM,” he added.
