BSF foils smuggling bids

TURA, Aug 6: A joint operation between the Meghalaya police and the BSF led to the seizure of 24,000 KGs of processed betel nuts worth Rs 48 lakhs in South Garo Hills, on Saturday. The joint operation was carried out in the bordering areas of Rongara under South Garo Hills district, where the team recovered a consignment of betel nuts dumped near the international border which were to be taken to Assam.
The consignment was seized and later handed over to Rongra Police Station for further legal action.
Meanwhile, in another operation, vigilant and alert troops of the 04 Bn and 172 Bn BSF seized clothing items worth over Rs 20 lakhs from the bordering area of East Khasi Hills and East Jaintia Hills, which were meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh. The seized items were handed over to concerned customs office for further action.
