NONGSTOIN, Aug 7: Three unidentified miscreants, wearing masks, set on fire a dumper truck and a transit mixer owned by Vozrozhdenie India Private Limited which is implementing the Nongstoin-Wahkaji road project.
Sources said the three miscreants entered the project camp at Mawthungkper village in West Khasi Hills at around 1:30 am on Monday and torched the two vehicles.
A company source said the driver of the dumper truck who was sleeping inside his vehicle woke up as soon as the vehicle was set on fire and jumped out of the vehicle to save his life. In the process, he slammed the truck’s door on one of the miscreants but failed to recognise him.
The source said the miscreants were carrying petrol cans and jute bags in order to destroy the property of the company and to hinder the peaceful construction of a road project which is being built to benefit the locals.
The incident has gravely affected the employees and created an unsafe atmosphere for the company to carry on with its work, the source said.
Nongstoin Police has registered a case and launched an investigation.
