Shillong, August 8: Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar announced the suspension of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O’Brien for the duration of the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament on Tuesday.
The suspension was prompted by O’Brien’s disorderly conduct during the session. O’Brien had earlier called for a discussion on Manipur, demanding the Leader of Opposition’s request for the same to be granted. In response, Dhankhar instructed O’Brien to take his seat and subsequently named him for expulsion from the House.
As per IANS, O’Brien’s suspension was initiated after Leader of the House Piyush Goyal proposed a motion, citing O’Brien’s continuous disruption of proceedings, defiance of the Chair, and consistent disturbance in the House.
Goyal presented the motion, stating, “I move to the Motion that O’Brien is suspended from the services of the House for the remaining part of the current session for his unruly behaviour unbecoming of a member of Rajya Sabha. Today on August 8, shouting slogans from the Well of the House thereby disregarding the authority of the Chair and disregarding every instruction of the Chair brings disrepute and shame to this august House.”
Subsequently, Dhankhar directed O’Brien to vacate the House premises and declared his suspension for the remainder of the session. The session is set to reconvene at 12 noon.
Amidst the announcement, Opposition MPs voiced their protest by raising slogans against the Chairman’s decision.
