SHILLONG, Aug 13: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is gearing up for the upcoming elections to the KHADC and the JHADC besides the Lok Sabha election which are due next year.
UDP president, Metbah Lyngdoh who was re-elected for a second term on Saturday, has stressed that the party’s base needs to be strengthened ahead of the crucial elections.
As far as the party candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seat is concerned, a UDP source on Sunday revealed that there are four contenders, including Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh (who had contested in 2014), party general secretary Jemino Mawthoh (who had contested in 2019), former KHADC chief executive member Titosstarwell Chyne and former MLA Process T. Sawkmie.
The source revealed that the party is yet to decide if they want to put up a candidate for the Tura Parliamentary seat.
According to the source, the newly-elected CEC will meet shortly to adopt a roadmap and strategies for the elections in the two autonomous district councils and the Lok Sabha.
Earlier on Saturday, Metbah had said that the UDP leaders are making sincere efforts to ensure the growth of the party.
He also attributed the success of the party in doubling its strength in the Assembly from six to 12 members to the UDP team.
“We have been able to take the party up to this level because of teamwork. Each and every member of the team has really contributed to the success of the party,” the UDP chief said while adding that the party will not rest on its laurels and would work harder to better its performance in the future.
