Shillong, August 21: In a significant operation, the Tripura police made a major breakthrough by seizing a staggering 1.3 kg of heroin, valued at Rs 10 crore, and apprehending three drug peddlers.

As per IANS, the seizure marks one of the largest drug confiscations in the state’s history. The North Tripura district Superintendent of Police, Bhanupada Chakraborty, revealed that the illicit substances were concealed within numerous soap cases, transported in a TATA Sumo vehicle originating from southern Assam.

Acting on confidential information, law enforcement set up a checkpoint at Churaibari in the northern district, successfully intercepting the vehicle. The three drug peddlers, Abdul Ali (28), Suman Krishna Das (21), and Prasenjit Das (23), were apprehended along with the seized drugs. The suspects are scheduled for a court appearance on Tuesday, following which police interrogations will commence.

According to another police official, the drugs were smuggled through Myanmar and routed via Mizoram and southern Assam before reaching Tripura. The ultimate intention was to transport the contraband into Bangladesh.

Tripura’s Chief Minister, Manik Saha, expressed his appreciation for the police force’s accomplishment in thwarting drug trafficking. Saha took to Twitter to commend their efforts and stated, “We are committed to building a drugs-free Tripura, and the state police has been playing a laudable role to achieve the goal.”

The strategic location of Tripura’s 856 km border with Bangladesh and Mizoram’s 510 km frontier with Myanmar unfortunately creates an accessible pathway for drug smuggling in the northeastern region of India.
