SHILLONG, Aug 20: Accusing the Public Works Department of “gross negligence”, the UDP on Sunday urged Chief Secretary DP Wahlang to issue necessary instructions to the department to initiate immediate repair of all deplorable roads in the city.
The UDP’s plea comes just days after the High Court of Meghalaya directed the PWD (Roads) to take immediate steps to repair the city roads.
“The PWD (Roads) will do well to attend to all potholes that have surfaced as a result of lack of maintenance of the state roads or because of the rains, including in and around the major towns, particularly Shillong,” the court had said in its order.
Some of the city roads which are in deplorable condition due to large pot holes include Mawkhar Main Road, Polo-Nongmynsong road, Golf Link-Lumshyiap road, Mawlai Bypass, Lachaumiere-Dhankheti road via Loreto Convent School, Boucher Road (Them Bijoy), Mawlai Nongpdeng-Iewrynghep road, Mawlai Phudmuri-Madan Heh road, Lapalang-Rynjah road, and MES-Demseiniong road.
Stating that the dilapidated condition of roads is troubling commuters and the public, UDP vice president, PT Sawkmie questioned the VVIPs for maintaining silence on the poor condition of roads in Shillong.
“I am surprises that none of the VVIPs has raised this issue. There are roads which are difficult to negotiate but people cannot avoid them since there is no alternative,” Sawkmie said.
