Shillong, August 23: A cloudburst struck Subathu in Himachal Pradesh, causing debris and water to surge into the area, raising concerns about house collapses among the residents. The deluge also swept away vehicles, adding to the havoc caused by the sudden burst of rainwater.
Meanwhile, heavy rains led to landslides at various points along National Highway 21 Mandi-Kullu via the Pandoh dam road, resulting in road blockages. Multiple other roads in the state were also closed, disrupting traffic movement.
As per India Today, intense rainfall led to a rise in the Balad river’s water level, resulting in the collapse of a bridge in Baddi. This bridge failure severed connectivity between the industrial area in Baddi and Haryana-Chandigarh.
Police had to manage traffic flow on National Highway 105 near Pinjore to Balad, Chandigarh road.
Unrelenting heavy rainfall continued to lash Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert in both states. Eight districts in Himachal Pradesh are predicted to experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, while several districts in Uttarakhand, including Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, and Bageshwar, are under a red alert due to the ongoing heavy downpours.
The IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in these districts of Uttarakhand from August 23 to 24, with a yellow alert issued for other districts in the state. The situation continues to be monitored closely as the region grapples with the impacts of these severe weather conditions.
