SHILLONG, Aug 22: The Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department is preparing a proposal of more than Rs 2,000 crore for a water supply scheme of the New Shillong Township (NST), PHE Minister Marcuise N. Marak said on Tuesday.
“We will have a separate water supply scheme worth more than Rs 2,000 for the NST. We are preparing the proposal to be submitted to the Centre for funding,” he said while claiming that Phase III of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) is making good progress.
Marak said issues such as obtaining permission from the Defence authorities for laying the main feeder and distribution pipes led to the delay of the GSWSS project. “We have been able to resolve the issues,” he said.
He said the department has not set any fresh deadline for completing the project but is trying to ensure it becomes a reality soon.
The PHE Department had earlier set December 2022 as the target for commissioning the GSWSS Phase III project. Its foundation stone was laid by former President Pratibha Patil at Mawphlang on October 22, 2008.
The Rs 193-crore project was funded by the Centre. The state government sanctioned another Rs 65 crore to complete the project that aims to improve the water supply in Shillong.
