SHILLONG, Aug 23: Four people including two juveniles were arrested by East Jaintia Hills Police in a case of extortion. Giving an account of the case, East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh Dhanoa said an unknown person had on Saturday demanded money from a resident of Lumshnong over the phone and threatened him with dire consequences if he refused to comply. Subsequently, while the resident was out on Monday, he was tailed. Around 3 pm, as his vehicle was parked at Dosti Hotel, Ladrymbai, two suspects reportedly entered the vehicle. Apprehensive of a crime at play, the police acted and nabbed the two persons. On being questioned, the duo revealed that they were collecting money on behalf of a certain individual who befriended them on Facebook. Consequently, police, on Tuesday evening, apprehended Issei Sungoh of Dkhiah East (Ladsutnga) from his residence — the apparent protagonist. Police said Sungoh made the phone calls to the victim and also befriended the two suspected attackers on Facebook and directed them to collect a certain sum of money from the man. Interestingly, Issei Sungoh was arrested earlier by the district police as one of the main accused persons in the case of IED explosion at Khliehriat Police Reserve in 2021. He was however released on bail later. The arrested persons are Issei Sungoh (29) of Dkhiah East (Lad-Sutnga), East Jaintia Hills, one Daruis Pakem (19), a resident of Moolaitbri Sumer, East Jaintia Hills, and two juveniles whose names have been withheld, the East Jaintia Hills SP said in a statement.
