Shillong, August 25: Simranjit Singh, a 29-year-old Sikh man, has been taken into custody and formally charged with murder following allegations of him shooting and killing his girlfriend within a parking garage situated in California.
The arrest of Singh took place in the preceding week, prompted by suspicions from the police that link him to the demise of his 34-year-old girlfriend at the Galleria mall’s multi-level parking facility in Roseville city.
During Singh’s court appearance on Wednesday, the Public Defender’s Office was designated to handle his legal representation, as affirmed by the Placer County District Attorney’s Office, which pressed charges against him. Notably, Singh did not enter a plea during this appearance.
The unfortunate incident transpired as the couple arrived together at the mall. At approximately 10:30 a.m. on a Saturday, Singh allegedly committed the crime. Following the act, he attempted to escape, leaving a firearm within the vehicle. This weapon was subsequently recovered by law enforcement, according to CBS News.
Prompt action from security personnel, along with accounts from eyewitnesses, led to Singh’s swift apprehension. The suspect was located shortly afterward, away from the mall’s premises.
Police officials confirmed that a second individual of interest was questioned but later released. As per their statement, there is no ongoing threat to the mall’s safety or its customers. Law enforcement personnel will remain present to conduct an investigation into the matter.
Singh remains incarcerated at the Placer County Jail in California, with no option for bail. The identity of the victim will be disclosed once her next of kin has been notified, as stated by the police.
