SHILLONG, Aug 30: The Meghalaya TMC on Wednesday asked the state government to take proactive steps to ensure that the recurring “encroachment bid” by Assam at many places of the interstate boundary with Meghalaya is kept in check.
“The fact that it (the land) belongs to Meghalaya necessitates some steps to make sure the encroachment stops,” state TMC president Charles Pyngrope said.
He said this while referring to the recurring interstate boundary skirmishes occurring while the dispute-solving process is on.
The most recent case was the standoff between the Karbi and Pnar communities in Lapangap village on the Assam-Meghalaya border.
“Encroachment is against the law. Our government must not allow it,” Pyngrope said.
A scuffle had erupted in May between the Khasi-Pnar and Karbi people residing along the interstate border at Khanduli in the West Jaintia Hills. According to reports, the tension escalated after some miscreants torched two temporary sheds in an agricultural field.
A few weeks ago, Assam minister and regional committee chairman Pijush Hazarika along with Deputy Chief Minister and regional committee chairman Sniawbhalang Dhar paid a joint visit to Khanduli toward resolving the border issue.
