TURA, Sept 5: The occasion of the 62nd Teacher’s Day was on Tuesday celebrated in different parts of Garo Hills with the organization of special programmes and functions by schools and district administrations to honour the knowledge givers on their special day.
The celebration ended with a high note in Tura as dignitaries and guests showered praise and appreciation on the teaching fraternity at a grand function organized by the district administration in collaboration with the education department at Tura district auditorium.
The elaborate function commemorating the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of teachers to society saw soulful renditions by school students dedicated to teachers all over the district. Other highlights of the day were the district awards presentation acknowledging the achievements and selfless contributions of teachers to the society.
District awards were also given to an exceptional Scout Master and Guide Captain for going beyond classroom teaching and imparting ethical value sto the students.
West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani accompanied by Adviser, ICFAI University, Dr Viola Sonachi Bsangma and other dignitaries presented the district awards under different categories (lower primary, upper primary, secondary sections ) to the exceptional teachers. The teachers who were conferred the district awards were Satal A Sangma, Teacher, Masumata Government L P School, Purida I Sangma, Headmistress, Chitoktak U P School, Tura, Subrata Sen (secondary section, Ningban R Marak, Scout Master, Garo Union Higher Secondary School, Tura and Sarikha A Sangma, Guide Captain, Little Flower Secondary School, Tura.
Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest< Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani stressed on the need to establish child centered learning alongside prescribed curriculum. Congratulating the teaching fraternity for their steadfast dedication to the society the deputy commissioner opined that if the teachers instilled confidence in the students they would respond with positive attitude. Stating that children were the most under represented category in the society the Deputy Commissioner said that as a teaching fraternity we should be able to provide students the ability to think critically.
Among others who spoke at the occasion were District School Education Officer, Tenang K Sangma, Adviser, ICFAI University, Dr Viola Sonachi B Sangma and Sub Divisional School Education Officer, Samuel Ch Marak.
The day long programme saw performance of special numbers by Tura Public School and KGBV, Jengjal. A lively game wherein a task written on a slip of paper had to be performed by the teachers and students was also conducted by Government Boy Higher Secondary School Teacher, Nancy A Sangma much to the amusement of the gathering.
The occasion was also celebrated in South West Garo Hills at the Multi Facility Centre in Ampati, with utmost enthusiasm and respect. The event, themed “The transformation of education begins with teachers,” was organized collaboratively by the Office of the District School Education Officer, District Mission Coordinator, and Sub-divisional School Education Officer, Ampati.
The event was graced by notable dignitaries, including Sanjay A Sangma, MLA of Mahendraganj and Chairman of Meghalaya Board Directors Infratech & Innovation Corporation Limited, who served as the Chief Guest, and Akhtar Ali, MDC of Zikzak, Deputy Commissioner of South West Garo Hills, who honored the event as the Guest of Honour. Also in attendance were YW Momin, ADC of South West Garo Hills, along with teachers and students from various educational institutions across South West Garo Hills.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the presentation of District Awards to teachers who have made remarkable contributions in their field. These awards served as a token of appreciation for their selfless service and tireless dedication.
Sanjay Sangma, in his address, extended warm wishes to all teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. He lauded their relentless commitment to the betterment of society despite facing numerous challenges. He emphasized the role of teachers in shaping the future and commended the efforts of the Conrad Sangma-led Meghalaya State Education Commission in addressing issues faced by schools and educational institutions.
Deputy Commissioner RP Marak expressed his delight at being part of this momentous event. He congratulated the awardee teachers and expressed gratitude to the entire teaching community. Acknowledging the challenging working environment faced not only by students but also by teachers, he highlighted the government’s initiatives to improve schools and urged teachers to instill character and independent thinking in their students. He also encouraged them to guide students toward diverse career opportunities beyond government exams.
