SHILLONG, Sep 4: The police crackdown on HITO members for violating prohibitory orders has evoked strong reactions from the VPP which has censured the alleged abuse of power by the police.
VPP Spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh on Tuesday said that the department should exercise restraint when handling such cases.
Taking a swipe at Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who holds the charge of Home (Police) department, the VPP spokesperson said that the Deputy CM should ensure that the department conducts itself professionally and in a restrained manner.
“It is clearly visible to any sensible human being that the department follows vendetta politics against those who choose to be critical of the state government. The invocation of section 171 and 34 of the IPC and section 105 of the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010, against the HITO reveals the abuse of power by the Police department,” Myrboh said in a statement, while also alleging that the department has grossly misinterpreted the provisions of law to make a false case against the organisation.
The VPP spokesperson also pointed out that HITO directly and openly campaigned against the NPP, especially the Home Minister in the last Assembly elections.
The party has condemned the police personnel involved in the “disproportionate use of force” against unarmed public on Monday.
“The action of the police Department at Thangskai and in Shillong and the incidents in the recent past strongly suggests that the Meghalaya Police personnel are mentally and psychologically weak to handle even slightest provocation,” he said.
The VPP spokesperson has demanded action against the concerned police official whose decision initiated the ‘brutality’ and other violations such as professional ethics. (Contd on P-9)

(Contd from P-1) “All the injured person(s) and those who have suffered other forms of losses by this unwarranted action by the police personnel must be satisfactorily compensated by the government,” the VPP demanded.
