Man lynched over alleged theft dies

Nongpoh, Sep 5: The 37-year-old who was brutally attacked by a mob in the Meghalaya Industrial Corporation (MIDC) area at Umiam succumbed to his injuries at Civil Hospital on Monday.
The victim, who was later identified as Bartan Marak, resident of Udalguri, Assam was attacked over alleged theft attempt.
The incident occurred on Sunday when Marak allegedly tried breaking into a house of a resident in the MIDC area.
Reportedly, Marak also tried to shoot one of the residents with an air pistol. He then tried to escape over a high wall and subsequently suffered a severe leg injury.
Thereafter, Marak was taken to Shillong Civil Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Umiam Police is currently investigating the chronology of the events, even though no arrests have been made so far.
The primary angle of the investigation will be determining if the attack on Marak was carried out in self-defence.
