NONGPOH, Sep 6: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Nongpoh Circle has raised serious concerns over the purported deplorable conditions at Civil Hospital, Nongpoh, citing a lack of basic facilities that are crucial for patient care and staff well-being.
In a meeting here with the Medical Superintendent (MS) of the hospital on Wednesday, the Union flagged multiple issues that have been affecting the hospital’s functionality.
The primary concern brought to the attention of the hospital authority was the absence of a generator to provide electricity during frequent power disruptions in Nongpoh.
President of KSU Nongpoh Circle John Lyngdoh emphasised that these power failures not only affect the hospital but also impact the entire community. According to Lyngdoh, the hospital is left in darkness during power outages due to the absence of a backup generator.
During their meeting with the MS, the Union was informed that the hospital’s existing generator is defective and requires fuel (petrol) to operate. Shockingly, the hospital has not received any funds earmarked for purchasing fuel, further exacerbating the electricity problem.
In addition to the electricity issue, the Union learned of several other pressing concerns plaguing the Civil Hospital Nongpoh. These include a shortage of doctors, inadequate housing facilities for medical staff, and a scarcity of water supply within the hospital premises.
Expressing deep concern over these issues, Lyngdoh stressed that a Civil Hospital should be adequately equipped with essential facilities to provide quality healthcare services to the community. He criticised the government’s failure to take responsibility for ensuring that these facilities are in place.  In light of the revelations, the KSU urgently appealed to the government to address these critical issues promptly and allocate the necessary resources to the Civil Hospital Nongpoh to ensure that patients receive the care they deserve, and that hospital staff can work under suitable conditions.
