Implementation of NEP 2020 in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, Sep 10: The 40-day-long standoff between NEHU Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla and the Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) over the implementation of the National Education Policy (MEP), 2020 is likely to end with the latter finally accepting an invitation from the former for a formal dialogue on the contentious issue.
The meeting will be held on Monday.
“We have decided to accept the invitation of the VC for a dialogue concerning the NEP 2020. We received the communication for the talks on Friday,” MCTA general secretary Airpeace W Rani said on Sunday.
He reminded that the MCTA had written to the VC on July 21 seeking redressal of the core issues relating to the NEP.
Rani said MCTA has received the invitation in which the VC made a reference to their letter dated April 18, 2023, which is not the primary focus of their current concerns.
“In the letter, the VC highlighted the potential benefits of implementing the NEP but there was no acknowledgment of the tangible challenges. Nonetheless, the MCTA which is committed towards betterment of the education sector optimistically anticipates a constructive and fruitful dialogue,” Rani said.
He further said that they would look up to the VC to address and redress the valid concerns of the Association as raised by it since July 21.
It may be recalled that the invitation of the VC to the MCTA came after the HYC had asked the former to either immediately call the meeting of the Academic Council and stakeholders to deliberate on the implementation of the NEP or resign from his post.
HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin had stated that NEHU should not shy away from the Academic Council as it is an apex decision-making body.
“We know the Academic Council never decided to implement NEP from this academic year. It was supposed to be implemented in the future. So, we do feel that the VC should not shy away from calling a meeting of the Academic Council,” Kharjahrin said.
“If he has lost the confidence of the Academic Council, he does not deserve to remain as the VC…Any VC who does not have the confidence of the Academic Council does not deserve to remain in that post,” he had said.
