Shillong, Sept 11: Shillong Congress MP, Vincent H. Pala said that the BJP-led NDA Government can decide to go ahead with its proposal of “one election one nation” besides changing the name of the nation to “Bharat” since they are in power.
“If the BJP wants, it can push to see that these two proposals become a reality since they have got the mandate. But there will be a backlash and it is going to be massive since there are strong oppositions to the intention of the BJP,” Pala said while speaking to a section of the reporters during the sideline of an event.
Stating that ‘one election in one nation’ is not a new thing, the Shillong Congress MP said that such a move was there even before.
According to him, it is going to be difficult for this proposal to be accepted looking at the prevailing situation throughout the country.
He said that this proposal was an attempt to wipe out the smaller parties.
“The smaller parties will face great difficulties to survive if there is ‘one election one nation’. The bigger parties will have better chances by this proposal,” Pala said.
Meanwhile, the Shillong MP said that from what he understands the Congress is not convinced with this move.
He further mentioned that he is also a member of the Public Grievances Committee where the majority of the members had advocated the need to bring down the expenditure by introduction of the policy of one election one nation.
“But the Congress has maintained that they are not convince about this proposal. The AICC national spokesperson will address the media on this particular issue,” he said.
When asked about the move to rename the nation as Bharat, the Shillong Congress MP said that this is an act of desperation on part of the Prime Minister and the BJP since they had found that the economy of the country turned worse.
“As the saying goes, a good economy means good politics and bad economy means bad politics. The youth are frustrated as there are limited job opportunities,’ the Shillong MP said
He further said that the name of India as a nation has been there for so many years.
According to him, the word “Bharat” is only to please the cow belt areas like UP and Bihar.
“But it is not going to be easy to change the name even though the BJP has made this move to help them in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls,” he added.
