U-19 Girls Cricket: SGH, SCA register thumping wins

SHILLONG, Sep 11: South Garo Hills District Cricket Association and Shillong Cricket Association won their respective matches in the Meghalaya Cricket Association’s U-19 Girls Inter District Cricket Tournament today by convincing margins. Jayshree Singh (105 not out) struck a peerless century as SCA defeated West Jaintia Hills DCA by 149 runs at Umbuda in Ri-Bhoi in Zone 1’s Group B, while SGH were 8-wicket winners against hosts North Garo Hills DCA at Salpara in Zone 2.SCA won the toss and chose to bat first, Jayshree hit 17 fours as Shillong CA made 227/5 in their allotted 29 overs at a run rate of 7.83. Sawakahi Syngkon (2/44) was the most successful bowler for WJH, while Yoolang Suting (1/39) and Doliza Lyngdoh (1/49) also picked up a wicket each. In the chase, WJH were never allowed to settle as they were dismissed for 78 in 23.3 overs. Mercia Able Dhar top-scored with 11 but the bowlers’ figures were far more impressive – Natasha Rabha bagged 4/20, Monica Singh 3/7 and Jennyfer Fancon 2/17. The other match saw NGH bat first on winning the toss but they were rumbled for just 66 in 25.2 overs with no batter getting into double figures. All seven SGH bowlers were among the wickets, Dianchidora N Sangma (2/5) and Rikmanchi M Sangma (2/7). SGH were eased to victory in 13.5 overs thanks to plenty of extras. Jaylynn R Marak (11 not out) and Janicka R Marak (11) contributed the most runs with the bat, while NGH’s Jessica Marak (1/14) and Chigame Marak (1/18) were the bowlers to take wickets. On Tuesday will witness the final round of group games. In Zone 1’s Group A, East Khasi Hills CA will face Ri-Bhoi DCA and in Zone 2 SGH will meet East Garo Hills DCA.

 

Trials for East Zone Junior Athletic C’ship on Sep 16

SHILLONG, Sep 11: The Meghalaya Athletics Association will be organizing the Selection Trial for the 34th East Zone Junior Athletic Championship 2023 on the 16th September 2023, 7am onwards at the SAI, STC, NEHU Campus, Mawlai,Shillong for the State Team to represent Meghalaya. The Athletes shouldbring their own respective Kits wear and Fooding on this day. No TA/DA will be given.There will be of four categories for the Selection:-1. U-14, born between 16-10-2009 to 15-10-2011.2. U-16, born between 16-10-2007 to 15-10-2009.3. Vithya Ramraj misses out on breaking PT Usha’s record
CHANDIGARH, Sep 11: Tamil Nadu’s Asian Games-bound R Vithya Ramraj came agonisingly close to breaking the legendary PT Usha’s 39-year-old women’s 400m hurdles record as she clocked 55.43 seconds during the Indian Grand Prix 5 here.The 24-year-old Vithya’s time was just one hundredth of a second less than Usha’s 55.42 which she had clocked while finishing fourth in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.Usha’s record is the second oldest national record in athletics after Shivnath Singh marathon NR of 1978.Usha is currently serving as the president of Indian Olympic Association. “Madam Usha is so talented and that is why her record stood for so long. I wanted to break the record, it was in my mind before the race today. I wanted to be the new Ma’am (Usha),” Vithya said. there is the Asian Games coming up, and I will try to break the NR there,” the athlete added after her event. (PTI)
