India at the epicentre of international developments

Editor,
A 37 page joint declaration was issued at the conclusion of G20 after the efforts of India. After Nehru, Modi’s supremacy in foreign affairs is well known. Nehru founded the Non- Aligned Movement along with Marshal Tito and Anwar Saddat and about hundred countries joined this Alliance. Just as Nehru was at the epicentre of all international developments, Prime Minister Modi is now at that place. Previously we felt proud of Nehru and now we have the same feeling about Modi. Even in Pakistan whether it is the ruling party or the opposition both are speaking in praise of Modi due to the successful foreign policy of India
India, which played a key role in getting Africa admitted to the G20, can also use this achievement to position itself as the leader of the Global South, a tag which China aspires to. Fòr the first time after the Group of 20’s large economies was founded in 1999, its members have agreed to admit another member- The African Union or AU. When the block that accounts for 80 percent of production admits a new member for the first time after 24 years, it speaks for itself about its importance in global geopolitics. Africa has natural resources which are spread over 55 countries. and by admitting the AU as its member, the G-20 is treating AU at par with the European Union, the only inter-governmental forum to have the membership of G20. Africa has another valuable asset-its young population. AU accounts for a mere 2.84 percent of the global GDP, compared to China’s 19 percent and India’s 9.3 percent.
In aiming for fundamental reforms in the way the world lives and consumes, this year’s G20 Summit has delivered a remarkable blueprint for renewable energy .And that is also in innovation in green hydrogen as clean energy, sustainable development, reforms in multilateral development banks and digital public infrastructure to deliver services to large societies. We can say that it was India’s finest hour in international affairs as it brought the most economically powerful nations of the world together in a consensus on diverse and divisive issues ranging from the Ukraine war to green initiatives to try and save the planet from global warming caused by climate change. At last, an ambitious set of goals have been documented and signed which is a big achievement of the G20 conference.
Joe Biden had again reaffirmed the US’s commitment for India’s quest for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. In a joint statement issued by the White House during his visit to Delhi, Biden declared his unwavering support for India’s permanent membership in the Security Council. Biden’s endorsement of India as a permanent UNSC seat is a testament to the USA’s recognition of India’s growing stature on the world stage. India, the world’s largest democracy and a burgeoning economic power house has consistently played a constructive role in international affairs. Its commitment to peacekeeping missions, engagement in climate change negotiations and its role in providing affordable healthcare solutions during the Covid-19 pandemic, underscore its dedication to global well-being. The significance of this endorsement extends beyond India’s national interests. It represents a broader acknowledgment that the UNSC needs a facelift to address the complex challenges of the 21st century effectively
During the G20 conference a broader consensus had been made among the eight countries for interconnectivity. The idea of such a joint infrastructure programme was first floated over 8 months ago in another forum called 12u2 which comprises the likes of India, Israel, US and UAE.
India remains a significant exporter of consumer goods and labour to West Asia. If implemented successfully, the project will provide an alternate route for Indian exporters to the Gulf, Arab, European and even African markets. The scope of the project, at the initial phase, is to connect UAE and Saudi Arabia with India, but it finally aims to extend the railway project up to the port of Haifa, in Israel. The proposed ‘Land-Bridge’ project is envisaged under the US initiative of ‘Build Back Better’ World (B3W) which aims to address the infrastructure deficit of $40 trillion in developing countries and to save them from China’s debt trap policy. For India the project aims to enhance its logistics connectivity with the Gulf region, which can be extended to African nations via Egypt, and beyond thereby boosting India’s trade competitiveness. It offers India access to European markets and provides an additional access route, bypassing the Suez Canal. It also counters China’s dominance in the region.

Jawaan: A powerful cinematic experience

Editor,
In a society where political discourse often takes a back seat to entertainment and sensationalism, the recently released film “Jawaan” has emerged as a powerful reminder of the critical role informed and engaged citizens play in shaping the future of their country. Directed by Atlee and featuring the iconic Shah Rukh Khan, “Jawaan” boldly addresses various pressing political and social issues, offering a thought-provoking narrative that transcends the confines of the silver screen.
At a time when media outlets and governmental agencies have struggled to effectively convey the gravity of certain societal challenges, “Jawaan” steps forward to bridge the gap. The film courageously tackles issues that have plagued the nation for years, issues that often go ignored or minimized amidst the noise of daily life.
One of the central themes of the movie is the alarming rate of farmer suicides in India, shedding light on the plight of those who feed the nation but remain ensnared in debt and despair. “Jawaan” forces us to confront the harsh realities faced by these individuals and their families, urging us to consider what more can be done to support agriculture and rural communities.
Furthermore, the film delves into the rampant corruption in the healthcare sector, a subject that hits close to home for many citizens who have experienced the frustrations of a broken system. It unapologetically portrays the need for a comprehensive overhaul of this sector, emphasizing that lives are at stake.
Perhaps most importantly, “Jawaan” emphasizes the disconnect between elected officials and the public, highlighting how far removed those in power can become from the daily struggles of ordinary citizens. Through the character of Vikram Rathore, the film calls on us to demand greater accountability from our leaders and to actively engage in the democratic process.
While the film serves as a compelling mirror reflecting society’s issues, it doesn’t stop there. “Jawaan” also offers a glimmer of hope, emphasizing the importance of speaking out against injustice and advocating for change. It sends a powerful message that ordinary citizens have the power to make a difference, especially through their votes.
In a time when voter apathy and disillusionment with the political system are prevalent, “Jawaan” serves as a wake-up call. It encourages audiences not only to appreciate the cinematic experience but also to introspect and take action. The film reminds us that being a responsible citizen is not limited to casting a vote every few years; it involves actively participating in the democratic process, holding leaders accountable, and working towards positive change in our communities.
In summary, “Jawaan” is not just a film; it’s a powerful call to action. It demonstrates the potential of cinema to engage, inform, and inspire. It challenges us to be educated and responsible citizens who can shape a brighter future for our nation. “Jawaan” is indeed a must-watch movie that offers both entertainment and enlightenment, reminding us that our voices and votes can make a profound impact on the society we live in.
Yours etc.,
R Sarki,
