India U-16 boys basketball team for U16 Asian C’ships announced

SHILLONG, Sep 12: The FIBA U16 Asian Championship 2023 is scheduled to be held at Doha, Qatarfrom 17th– 24th September 2023. The Teams participating in the FIBA U16 AsianChampionship 2023 are Australia, Bahrain, China, India, Iran, Japan, Jordan,Kazakhstan, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka. The Indian U16 Boys National Basketball is placed in Group A along with Australia, Lebanon and Sri Lanka. The Indian U16 Boys National Basketball Team for the FIBA U16 Asian Championship 2023 are: Adavan Chellam Kumarasan, Jins Kalayil Joby, Ankush, Kailash Bishnoi, Aryan Sharma,Lavish (C), Mirthul Vel Dhanesekar,Jagmeet Singh, Harjeet Singh, Lokesh Kumar Sharma, Tajinderbir Singh, Mohit Jogchand. Along with Ram Kumar – head coach, Asad Ulah Khan – coach, Ranjan Sharma – Physiotherapist, Donald Steven Wahlang – team manager, Sushil Kumar – Head of Delegation.The FIBA U16 Asian Championship in Doha will serve as a qualifier to the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup that will take place in Turkey from 29 June to 7 July 2024.

 

Indian eves to begin Asian CT campaign against Thailand
RANCHI, Sep 12: The Indian women’s team will begin its campaign at the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy with a clash against Thailand here on October 27, according to the schedule announced by Hockey India on Tuesday.The tournament will begin with Malaysia and Japan playing the first game, while hosts India will play the third game of the opening day when they take on Thailand at Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro Turf hockey stadium in Ranchi.The Asian Champions Trophy will see Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, China, and India go into battle to lift the coveted trophy.The six-team tournament will conclude on November 5.Hosts India have been in good form, particularly after the historic bronze at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and title victory at FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup Spain last year.The hosts have also won the Asian Champions Trophy in 2016 and were runners-up in 2018. They will face Korea in their last match of the group stage on November 2. (PTI)

 

Lyon sack coach Laurent Blanc
PARIS, Sep 12: Seven-time French champion Lyon parted ways Monday with coach Laurent Blanc following a terrible start to the French league season.Lyon has only one point in four matches, and conceded 10 goals, with the club sitting at the bottom of the standings after a humiliating 4-1 home loss to Paris Saint-Germain.Blanc, whose experience at the helm of the club lasted just 11 months, was under contract until June 2024. The former France coach had complained about the frugal offseason purchases amid a legal dispute and clashes between the club’s current owner, American businessman John Textor, and his predecessor Jean-Michel Aulas. Lyon said Blanc left the club by mutual consent alongside assistant coaches Franck Passi and Philippe Lambert. Deputy coach Jean-Francois Vulliez has been appointed caretaker. (AP)

 

Subroto Cup football tourney from Sept 19-Oct 23
NEW DELHI, Sep 12: Bengaluru has been added to the list of host cities for the upcoming edition of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament, to be held from September 19 to October 23 at three venues.The oldest national inter-school football tournament was earlier held in Delhi and Gurugram.While the Under-17 junior boys and girls tournaments will be held in Delhi-NCR, the Under-14 sub-junior boys competition will be played at the ASC Centre, the Air Force School, Jalahalli and the Air Force School, Yehalanka in Bengaluru.In Delhi-NCR, the matches will be played at the Ambedkar Stadium, Tejas Football Ground (Delhi), Subroto Football Ground (Delhi) and the GD Goenka School (Gurugram).A total of 109 teams from 27 states and Union Territories will participate in three categories. Teams from Bangladesh and Nepal will add foreign flavour with over 180 matches scheduled to be played.Pilgrim Higher Secondary School, Dimapur (Nagaland) are the defending champions in the junior boys tournament, St Patrick’s School, Gumla (Jharkhand) are the reigning champions in junior girls category. In the sub-junior boys category, Heirok Higher Secondary School, Imphal (Manipur) are the previous edition’s winner. “The 62nd Subroto Cup will be historic given that it will be played in Bengaluru for the first time. It has been our desire to spread the reach of this tournament to more corners of the country,” said Air Marshal RK Anand, vice-chairman Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society. (PTI)
