Shillong, September 14: Google is streamlining its global recruiting team by laying off hundreds of employees, citing a decline in hiring demands at the Alphabet-owned company.

As per IANS, the tech giant acknowledged that the “volume of requests for our recruiters has gone down,” but it did not disclose the exact number of staff reductions within the recruiting workforce.

A spokesperson for Google stated, “In order to continue our important work to ensure we operate efficiently, we’ve made the hard decision to reduce the size of our recruiting team.” The company is offering support to affected employees, including a transition period, outplacement services, and severance packages to aid them in finding new opportunities, both within Google and beyond.

Google had already slowed down its hiring pace in the previous year due to the global economic slowdown. Earlier this year, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced plans to lay off approximately 12,000 employees worldwide, constituting over 6% of the total workforce. Google India also terminated more than 400 employees as part of these cutbacks.

In an effort to further economize, Google encouraged employees returning to the office to share workspaces with colleagues to maximize office space. Additionally, the company implemented cost-cutting measures such as reducing or discontinuing perks like free snacks, workout classes, and personal equipment spending for laptops.

These actions reflect Google’s strategic adjustments in response to evolving business dynamics and changing workforce demands.
