SHILLONG, Sep 14: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said there will be challenges in solving the border disputes with Assam but people should live in peace and harmony.
He said confrontation is not required to resolve concerns. He stressed on peace and dialogues for solving matters.
“There are challenges and complications but problems can never be resolved through confrontations; rather, answers can only be found through conversations, understanding and trust,” Sangma said.
“Hence, we have to ensure that we build that trust with Assam, be firm in our negotiations and terms and find ways in which we can accommodate each other,” he said.
Asked about the Karbi guest house inaugurated in Shillong, he said it was part of the trust-building mechanism and mutual understanding.
Meanwhile, a delegation of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, led by its Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang, called on Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem in the presence of other executive members here on Thursday.
Later, Syiem told reporters they had discussed the need to maintain a healthy relationship between the two councils, especially on the matter of preservation of culture and practices of the two communities.
He said they stressed the need for unity among the 10 Autonomous Councils in the Northeast to protect the interests of indigenous communities. He also said that both sides discussed the prevailing tension in some villages along the interstate border.
Syiem said the KHADC managed to impress upon the KAAC that the Khasi-Pnar border residents should not be harassed, be it in their agricultural activities or trading activities. He said the KHADC expressed its concern over the recent incidents in Khanduli and other areas.
Ronghang did not speak much to the media other than stating that they were in Meghalaya to promote friendship between the two councils.
