TURA, Sep 14: West Garo Hills (WGH) Police has ordered an inquiry after an incident in the Rongkhon Songgital area left a 20-year-old girl with a head injury.
Social media was agog since Thursday morning claiming at least three policemen hit the girl with beer bottles on her head which resulted in her receiving head injuries.
Police however denied any involvement in the assault stating that whatever happened will be determined after a thorough investigation.
Informing about the incident, West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Abraham Sangma said that on Wednesday evening, a group of young boys and girls had gathered for a party near the graveyard in the Rongkhon Songgital area. Those gathered were apparently drunk as well.
“After a verbal complaint was received, a police team lead by the SI of the Araimile Beat House reached the spot and found the complaints to be true. Upon seeing the police, most of them dispersed. However many of them were reluctant to move away and thus our team had to be forceful,” informed the SP.
Apparently after the revellers dispersed, the police left the spot. It was only in the morning after the post of the girl with the injury to her head surfaced that the police were notified on the matter and an investigation was launched.
“After a thorough search, we were able to locate the girl, who is a student. We prodded her on how she was injured and who she was with. She did not wish to reveal what happened or inform on her friends but stated she was there. Her statement was taken in front of her parents,” informed Abraham.
The SP further stated that the girl has denied that the police had assaulted her, either with beer bottles or otherwise.
“The investigation is being led by a DSP-level officer and has been handed over to the Women’s Police cell. Hopefully she will be willing to talk about the incident. We will act after the investigation is complete,” asserted the SP.
