Mukul accuses NPP-led govt of shying away from discussing critical issues

Shillong, Sept 15: Former Chief Minister and Opposition TMC Parliamentary Party Chief, Mukul Sangma on Friday slammed the current dispensation for wanting to have an escape route from discussing the critical issues of the State in the Assembly.

“They want to have an escape route, for whose interest? … In a democracy our intent and objectives should be directed towards ensuring that justice is done to the people and here are many issues and many things to be discussed in the house,” said the TMC Parliamentary Party chief on the debate revolving around the short duration of the autumn session of the State Assembly.

“Let us see how the party in power looks at the responsibility of providing that space in the house particularly the opposition to address the concerns of the people,” he added.

Pointing out that there are too many issues to be taken up in the State Assembly, he said, “When you look at the supplementary demands so many are there, so many questions have been put up by the opposition members, from the treasury bench also. Now how many of these issues raised in the form of questions and discussions can be taken up keeping in mind the limited time available”.

Stating that whatever is considered as important and need to be prioritised are already put up and that they would like to see the response of the government, he said, there are issue concerning law and order, negotiation for settlement with HNLC and how things are being handled concerns of the people for a better life.

He also said that department wise there are issues which are indications of mismanagement, irregularities.

According to him, even after the formation of the new government there are lots of other irregularities which are being brought to their notice which are yet to be known.
