Subroto Cup: Meghalaya start with victory over Goa

SHILLONG, Sep 20: Meghalaya made their mark in their first match of the 62nd Subroto Cup with a 2-0 victory over Goa in Pool G of the U-17 girls’ category today. It was a bright and early start at 7AM in New Delhi and the goals came late in the 60-minute match with Eiladki Ksoo producing the first after a solo run in the 57th minute.Danishisha Lyngdoh (60’+1) then doubled the lead in the first minute of second half stoppage time to bag full points for Meghalaya.Meghalaya will play Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan on Thursday at the same time.
Ronaldinho to visit Kolkata during Durga Puja
KOLKATA, Sep 20: Retired Brazilian legend Ronaldinho is set to visit Kolkata during the auspicious occasion of Durga Puja next month.An official privy to the development said that Ronaldinho is likely to visit the city between October 15-19 but the final date will be ascertained following the confirmation date of Barca Legends match at Congo.According to the official, Ronaldinho, who will be visiting Kolkata for the first time, is expected to feature in a short charity match, besides visiting a football clinic and a Durga Puja pandal. He will also inaugurate a statue of Argentine FIFA World Cup winner Lionel Messi.Ronaldinho is also expected to attend some sponsor meet and greet events and visit the nearby town of Rishra.The official involved has played a key role in bringing football legends to the city in the past, including Maradona, Pele and Cafu.Notably, Ronaldinho also has his football academy in the city, the R10 Academy, in Rajarhat. Marseille coach Marcelino steps down amid tensions
MARSEILLE, Sep 20: Marseille coach Marcelino stepped down Wednesday after less than three months in charge amid tensions with fans who complained this week about the team’s poor showing since the start of the season, and the way the club is run.Marcelino’s departure was announced on the eve of Marseille’s Europa League game at Ajax, and only days before the French league’s biggest game against rival Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.The former Athletic Bilbao coach had replaced Igor Tudor in June after Marseille secured a third-place finish in the league. It was not immediately clear who would be in charge of the team against Ajax.The announcement followed a meeting Monday between Marseille president Pablo Longoria, several directors and groups of supporters, who hold considerable weight at Marseille. During the talks, fans castigated the board and asked for its departure. They complained about the team’s recent displays but also criticized Longoria’s policies, including the frequent changes of coach and players, and the running of the women’s and youth teams. (PTI)
Siraj back to No. 1 in ICC ODI bowling rankings
DUBAI, Sep 20: Indian pacer Mohammad Siraj has regained his number one spot in the men’s ICC ODI bowling rankings after his six-wicket haul in the final of the recently-concluded Asia Cup.Siraj, who first grabbed the top position in January before being displaced by Josh Hazlewood in March, has surged eight spots after his memorable performance that helped dismiss Sri Lanka for just 50 runs and enabled India to complete a 10-wicket victory in the summit clash.Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav has moved down three places to ninth.Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah climbed up two places to 27th while Hardik Pandya rose eight spots to 50th.Among batters, openers Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma have retained their second and 10th spots respectively while star batter Virat Kohli moved up a rung to eighth.Pandya is the only all-rounder in the top 20, climbing up a spot to the sixth place.
