MAWKYRWAT, Sep 27: In keeping with the objective of Swachhta Hi Seva 2023 campaign, a cleaning drive at Monolith Heritage in Mawkyrduk village ensured that the tourist spot was spick and span for visitors.
The tourist spot is located in Mawlangwir, 3 km from Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills.
The cleaning drive was organised by the Executive Engineer, Public Health Engineering (PHE) Division Mawkyrwat, along with the District Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin (DSMB), Mawkyrwat. The campaign witnessed active participation of village leaders and members of the Executive Committee of Mawlagwir village, Seng Longkmie of Mawlangwir village, as well as officers and staff of the office of the Executive Engineer, PHE, Mawkyrwat Division, and DSMB (G), South West Khasi Hills. Speaking at the programme, Executive Engineer of PHE, Mawkyrwat Division, K Nongbsaw, stressed on the importance of raising awareness among the residents of the district about the significance of maintaining cleanliness, especially in tourist spots and public places. He asked locals to appeal to the visitors to refrain from littering, and to encourage them to dispose of garbage in their designated waste bins.
He highlighted that this year’s Swachhta Hi Seva campaign revolves around the theme of ‘Garbage Free India,’ urging the public to uphold cleanliness and responsible waste management both at home and in public spaces.
Nongbsaw also discussed the significance of segregating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.
Speaking about plastic waste, he mentioned the establishment of a plastic waste management unit at Nonglang village for storage of plastic waste collected from various parts of the district. A plastic baling machine would soon be installed, to compact plastic waste, making it easier to transport out of the district for recycling, he added.
