Shillong, September 28: In a boost to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, HP, a major player in the PC and printer industry, has announced a partnership with Google to produce Chromebooks in India.
These Chromebook devices will be manufactured at the Flex Facility near Chennai, where HP has been producing a range of laptops and desktops since August 2020.
As per IANS, production of HP Chromebooks is set to commence on October 2, primarily targeting the demand for affordable PCs in India, especially within the education sector, as stated by the company.
Vickram Bedi, Senior Director-Personal Systems, HP India, emphasized, “Manufacturing Chromebook laptops in India will allow Indian students to get easy access to affordable PCs. By further expanding our manufacturing operations, we continue to support the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the government.”
Chromebooks are widely used in K-12 education, benefiting over 50 million students and educators globally. These devices, powered by ChromeOS, come with built-in accessibility and security features, enhancing educational experiences and safeguarding user data.
Bani Dhawan, Head of Education-South Asia, Google, noted, “The local production of Chromebooks with HP marks an important step in our efforts to continue supporting the digital transformation of education in India.”
Since December 2021, HP has been manufacturing a variety of laptops in India, including HP EliteBooks, HP ProBooks, and HP G8 series notebooks. The company has also expanded its locally manufactured commercial desktops, offering a range of models, including mini towers (MT), mini desktops (DM), small form factor (SFF) desktops, and All-in-One PCs, featuring both Intel and AMD processor options to cater to diverse customer segments.
