Shillong, September 29: Amid renewed violence in Manipur, a mob made an attempt to attack Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s vacant ancestral home on Thursday night. This incident occurred despite heightened security measures and a curfew in the Imphal valley.
As per NDTV, the violence in Manipur reignited following the circulation of a viral video showing the bodies of two students who had reportedly gone missing in July. In response, the government reinstated a five-day suspension of internet services as a precautionary measure and announced the closure of all schools in the state until Friday.
Although the situation in Manipur’s Imphal valley remained tense on Friday morning after a night of violent clashes, curfew restrictions were partially relaxed in Imphal East from 5 am to 11 am on September 29, according to an order issued by the district magistrate.
Security forces successfully thwarted the attempt to attack the Chief Minister’s residence, dispersing the mob with tear gas shells after they had come within 100-150 meters of the property.
Reports of militants openly moving around and inciting mobs in the Imphal valley have emerged. As a response, Senior Superintendent of Police Rakesh Balwal, known for his expertise in handling terror-related cases, has been brought back to Manipur from Kashmir. The 2012 batch IPS officer will be assigned a new posting in Manipur upon his arrival in the state.
