SHILLONG, Sep 29: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has taken exception to the decision of the central government to organise a cleaning drive on Sunday to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
In a statement issued on Friday, VPP general secretary Ricky AJ Syngkon said this decision of the central government is a direct attempt to dishonour the sentiments of the followers of the Christian faith in the country.
“The party, therefore, appeals to every Christian in the state to boycott the programme and refrain from participating in the cleaning drive activities on the mentioned day,” the VPP statement said.
“As per tradition, the cleaning drive should be organised on October 2 every year as part of honouring the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi,” it added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged people to join a nationwide cleanliness drive at 10 am on October 1, stating that a clean India is a shared responsibility.
