Shillong, October 1: The Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Dorwaiswami, encountered an unexpected hurdle during his visit to Glasgow, Scotland.
On Friday, a group of Khalistani extremists prevented his entry into the Gurdwara Guru Granth Sahib Sikh Sabha. The incident prompted a swift response from the gurdwara, which issued a statement condemning the disruptive behavior.
As per India Today, the statement from the Glasgow Gurdwara vehemently denounced the disorderly conduct that disrupted the peaceful atmosphere of the Sikh place of worship. It detailed the events of September 29, where unidentified individuals from outside the Glasgow area attempted to disrupt Dorwaiswami’s planned visit. Even after the departure of the visitors, these unruly individuals continued to disturb the congregation. The local police, in the form of Police Scotland, intervened and took note of the situation.
The Indian envoy’s visit took an unexpected turn as he was confronted by Khalistani British Sikh activists who expressed his unwelcome presence. Dorwaiswami had a scheduled meeting with the gurdwara committee on Albert Drive, which was marred by this confrontation, as described by a pro-Khalistani activist.
Subsequently, India raised the matter with the United Kingdom, seeking action against those responsible for the incident. The High Commission of India in London issued a statement, stating that three individuals from outside Scotland deliberately disrupted the envoy’s visit. It also noted that one of these men attempted to forcibly open the envoy’s car door, raising concerns that demand police intervention.
This incident unfolded against the backdrop of a significant diplomatic dispute between India and Canada regarding the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.
