Many takers for Swachhata Hi Seva

SHILLONG/TURA, Sep 2: Many citizens laboured on Sunday to show their grit in making the surroundings greener and cleaner.
At the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), a remarkable community spirit and environmental consciousness was displayed during a programme called ‘Swachta Divas – EK Tarrekh Ek Ghanta’, an initiative aimed at promoting cleanliness and environmental sustainability. This event brought together more than 300 enthusiastic students and teachers, who actively participated in a one-hour long cleanliness drive through ‘Shramdaan’ (voluntary labour) programme.
The event was graced by Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla, the Vice-Chancellor of NEHU, and Prof SR Joshi, Registrar, who led by example by actively participating in the cleanliness drive within and outside the campus. The infectious enthusiasm and dedication of the NEHU fraternity towards this noble cause were palpable throughout the event.
In his address, Prof Shukla emphasised the importance of cleanliness and its profound impact on the environment. He highlighted that ‘Swachhata Divas’ should not merely be a one-day event but rather a year-long commitment to keeping our surroundings clean and preserving the natural beauty of our region. The VC further drew inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, who consistently championed the cause of cleanliness and the preservation of nature.

“Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings and ideals continue to resonate with us today,” said Prof. Shukla. “His emphasis on cleanliness and the harmonious relationship between humanity and nature serves as a guiding light for us all. It is our responsibility to follow in his footsteps and work towards a cleaner and greener future.”
The “Swachhata Divas” event at NEHU was a significant step towards fostering a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility among the academic community and the broader society. The active involvement of students and teachers showcased their commitment to these values and their determination to contribute positively to the environment.
The event concluded on a high note, with participants expressing their eagerness to continue such initiatives and make a lasting impact on the cleanliness and sustainability of the region.
The Zoological Survey of India, Shillong, championed a monumental cleanliness drive as part of the nationwide ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign on Sunday. Over 120 individuals united to partake in ‘shramdaan’ alongside ZSI Shillong’s dedicated team, cleaning a 1-kilometer roadside stretch at Polo Bazar in Shillong.
‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ is a resounding clarion call across India for cleanliness, sanitation, and clean India. ZSI Shillong, a distinguished research institution operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, wholeheartedly embraced this mission, rallying the local community towards a cleaner, healthier future.
Conscientious citizens enthusiastically volunteered along with the ZSI Shillong team to rid the Polo Market area of litter and waste. The once-neglected thoroughfare was transformed into a clean, visually appealing cityscape.
Joining the others on the day, NIT Meghalaya conducted an hour-long cleanliness drive.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah lent a hand in the drive, which witnessed wholehearted participation from all stakeholders of NIT Meghalaya including Director, Registrar, Deans, faculty, staff, ladies club (Harmony) members, students, children, and others.
Around 250-300 persons participated in the event.
Besides cleaning the ground at Dong Madan area, Lapalang, Mawpat, caps with message on Swachhata were distributed among all participants. The Swachhata Pledge was taken by all present who took an oath to dedicate 100 hours of Swachhata a year.
The institute is also organising a Swachhata awareness rally on Monday. The rally will commence at 9:30 am from Lapalang ground to Rynjah and back. It will conclude at 10:30 am.
In South Garo Hills, Swachhata Run was organised to celebrate ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ and Ayushman Bharat Diwas 2023 recently.
The run was organised by the District Sports Office,South Garo Hills in collaboration with
Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin)and MHIS inconvergence with PMJAY.
The run was held in Baghmara Sports Complex in a bid to raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness and to motivate beneficiaries’ to come forward for Aadhar link with the MHIS card, ABHA Registration and to generate new MHIS card.
The dignitaries included representatives from the District Sports Office, Dr Calvaryn R. Sangma, Medical Superintendent,Baghmara Civil Hospital,Swachh Bharat Mission(Gramin), MHIS etc.
