Jowai gets new Bishop
JOWAI, Oct 1: Rev Father Ferdinand Dkhar DD was ordained as the new full-fledged Bishop of Jowai Diocese at the Church of the Holy Spirit Parish Ummulong, West Jaintia Hills, on Sunday. Thousands of Catholics thronged to the venue of sanctification of the Bishop where ordination was done by Most Rev Victor Lyngdoh DD, Shillong Archbishop. Government dignitaries such as MPs, MLAs, MDCs along with Bishops of the Northeastern states and sisters were present at the ceremony. A highlight of the day was the presentation of a biography of Rev Fr. Dkhar, born on February 26, 1962, at Iongkaluh village of East Jaintia Hills, a firstborn son out of 10 siblings of Edwin Kyndait and Philomina Dkhar. He was conferred the holy order as Lyngdoh Sohblei on January 23, 1994. In the evening congregation service, programmes such as prayer dance by St. Mary Mazzarello Convent Jowai, plate dance by Sunjuk Kynthai Jowai Diocese, choir piece by Joseph Nardini Seminary Ummulong and a traditional dance from Jowai Diocese Catholic Youth Movement were held. The vote of thanks was given by Fr Martin Shylla, Chancellor of Jowai Diocese.

Mock parliament in city college
SHILLONG, Oct 1: In a bid to familiarise the students with the parliamentary proceedings, the Department of Political Science, St Mary’s College, conducted a mock parliament on ‘Shillong Smart City’. Members of the treasury and opposition debated on various aspects of the programme, particularly the challenging scenario of land acquisition, road alignment, automation, mobility solutions, security, health and wellness among others. Programme implementation and timely completion were the subjects which witnessed exchanges of heated arguments. However, the House expressed in unison that Smart City project is going to be a game-changer.

Student enrichment programme
SHILLONG, Oct 1: Sankardev College Alumni Committee and the Alumni Association organised a one-day students enrichment programme on ‘Building Career: Potentials and Opportunities’, at the college auditorium on Saturday. The welcome address was given by E Kyndiah, Convener of the Alumni Committee, which was followed by a speech from the Principal of the College, Dr Eureka FP Lyngdoh. The resource persons of this programme were Santosh Sunar, CEO of Be the Guide Indian Mentoring Academy Pvt Ltd and his team who deliberated and enlightened the students on the steps involved in decision making process to ensure a successful career. The other resource persons were from the Centre for Career Development and Placement, Martin Luther Christian University — Dr Julian Oscar Dhar, Associate professor and Head, Centre for Career Development and Placement, MLCU, and Dr Lewaka Plain, Career Counselling and Assistant Professor, Department of Allied Health Sciences — who highlighted the principles in choosing the right career option. The programme was attended by students of the College and other Colleges from Shillong.

Natl seminar on zoonotic diseases
SHILLONG, Oct 1: The Department of Zoology, Sankardev College, Shillong, in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department, organised a one-day national seminar (hybrid mode) on the theme ‘Zoonoses and One Health’, in the conference hall of the college on Saturday. The inaugural speech was delivered by Prof M Kharbyngar, Head of the Department, which was followed by the welcome address from Dr Reena Singh, Vice-Principal of the College. The inaugural address and keynote lecture was delivered by the Joint Director Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department, Dr P R Joshi. The resource persons for the seminar included Dr Phidasharai Kharmawlong, who spoke on the topic ‘Rabies in Animals: Its Zoonotic Implications’. This was followed by a presentation from Dr Hosterson Kylla, who took up ‘One Health: Controlling Zoonotic Diseases’. Dr Samrat Sengupta delivered a presentation on ‘Human-Wildlife Interaction which is changing the Dynamics of Zoonotic Diseases Outbreaks’. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr J Dkhar, Associate Professor.
