Tura, Oct 7: As if to show how poorly National Highway renovation can be managed, many sections of the newly restored sections of the NH 51 have already begun to deteriorate just about 3 months after completion.

The section that is being referred to is the newly done parts of the road by Midas Constructions between the Jengjal Airport up to the village of Rongram, all of which fall under the West Garo Hills (WGH) district.

The road renovation was completed by the above mentioned company just after the elections this year. A total of close to 20 kms on the NH – 51 was worked upon.

This same section of the road had suffered huge wear and tear over the past few years and had become dangerous for travel as ferrying heavy loads necessitated renovation work. However after being completed, it didn’t even take a month for parts of the road to become similar to what had existed earlier.

In fact, almost the same sections that were the problem areas, prior to repair, are once again in dilapidation. Some sections are already being repaired, going on to show that the work done was shoddy.

“There has been rain around for sure but this has not affected the other sections of the road. It is only the newly renovated section that apparently is being impacted by the rain. This only goes to show that the renovation work was sub standard. The contractor really needs to be questioned on this and acted upon as well,” informed a local resident from Asanang.
