SHILLONG, Oct 7: As many as 27 pilgrims from Meghalaya are stuck in Bethlehem, Jerusalem, where a “war” has broke out between Israel and Palestine.
Prominent among those stuck in Jerusalem are Rajya Sabha member NPP state president WR Kharlukhi, his wife and his daughter, who had gone on a pilgrimage to the holy city.
Unconfirmed reports said that the pilgrims are likely to make their way to Egypt on Sunday.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday said that 27 citizens of Meghalaya who travelled for the Holy Pilgrimage to Jerusalem are stuck in Bethlehem due to the tension between Israel and Palestine.
“I am in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure their safe passage back home,” the chief minister posted on ‘X’.
He said the state government would leave no stone unturned in its effort to secure their safe passage back home.
A surprise attack by Hamas militants from Gaza at daybreak killed at least 200 Israelis on Saturday even as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared “war” and said his country would extract an “unprecedented price” from its enemy.
