McCarthy not resigning
from Congress
Washington, Oct 7: Just days after becoming the first ever US House Speaker to be ousted from office in the middle of his term, Republican Kevin McCarthy has denied reports that he was resigning from Congress. Addressing reporters on Friday, the former Speaker said: “No, I am not resigning. We are going to keep the majority. I am going to help the people I got here, and we are going to expand it further.” Earlier on Friday, reports were doing the rounds saying that he was expected to step down at some point after the House Speaker’s election. Pressed on whether he has considered stepping down early, he told the reporters: “I look at it every time I have to decide whether I am going to run for reelection or not.” (IANS)

 

 

Lebanon’s Navy rescues 125 immigrants
Beirut, Oct 7: The Lebanese Navy has rescued 124 Syrians and one Lebanese on board an illegal immigration boat off the shores of al-Mina in the northern city of Tripoli near the Palm Islands. According to the National News Agency, the boat had set off from al-Abda Beach, and its engine broke down on Friday afternoon. The passengers called for help from the Army Naval forces, whose members immediately intervened and rescued them, Xinhua news agency reported. The boat and passengers were transferred to the port of Tripoli and were provided with first aid immediately. Lebanon has witnessed rising attempts at illegal immigration by sea to Europe amid the country’s financial crisis which has plunged many Lebanese families into poverty. (IANS)

 

Canada confirms staff evacuated from Delhi
Toronto, Oct 7: Canada has confirmed of relocating some lower-level diplomatic staff from its High Commission in New Delhi to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore amid the ongoing tensions with India. The evacuation took place over the last several weeks. Alhough no official statement has been made by the Canadian government on the evacuation of the staff from Delhi, government sources confirmed to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on Friday that the lower-level diplomatic staff has been shifted from Delhi to Malaysia and Singapore. However, the sources said, the decision to relocate diplomatic staff from Delhi was “not directly related to the demand this week from India for Canada to reduce its diplomatic footprint”. India has given October 10 as the deadline for Canada to evacuate 41 of its diplomatic staff in India. (IANS)

 

 

17 killed after
bus overturns
Mexico City, Oct 7: At least 17 people were killed when a bus carrying migrants, mostly Venezuelans, overturned on a highway in southern Mexico, authorities said. The accident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. local time, on a highway linking Oaxaca and the neighbouring state of Puebla, said the Oaxaca state’s civil protection coordination on Friday. At least 17 people were killed and about 25 others were injured, who were being treated in hospitals, preliminary reports said. (IANS)
