Shillong, October 16: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, attending the Amrit Kalash Yatra in Nalbari district, emphasized that the ongoing delimitation exercise for Assembly and parliamentary constituencies is aimed at safeguarding the interests of Assam’s indigenous population.
As per IANS he revealed that the majority of Assembly seats are now secure for the indigenous people of Assam, with at least 105 out of the 126 Assembly seats potentially won by them.
Sarma has consistently maintained that the delimitation process will be advantageous for Assamese indigenous communities. However, this assertion has stirred controversy, with the opposition alleging that Sarma is influencing the Election Commission (EC) to manipulate the delimitation for the benefit of the BJP. The Congress party has accused the EC of becoming a puppet of the ruling party.
During his participation in the Amrit Kalash Yatra, Sarma expressed his satisfaction with the overwhelming support the program has received from the people of Nalbari. Notably, some Congress leaders were suspended from the party for participating in the Amrit Kalash Yatra, and three party MLAs were issued show cause notices for the same.
As part of the Amrit Kalash Yatra, soil is being collected from households in villages and municipal wards across the state, which will be mixed together and placed in urns on October 26.
Around 270 urns will be sent to the national capital, while an equal number will be stored in Shankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati. These urns will be used in the foundation-laying ceremony of Assam’s largest proposed university in Gohpur.
