MAWKYRWAT, Oct 18: Mawkyrwat MLA Rentikton L Tongkhar, on Wednesday, urged upon the locals to actively participate in government programmes.
Tongkhar observed that till date, there several people in Mawkyrwat area that have been misled and are apprehensive of government schemes because of Adhaar card. “At the end of the day, you will see only loses and no gains. We encourage the people not to be afraid of baseless things because as ‘Jaitbynriew’ we have suffered so much due to superstition,” Tongkhar said after inaugurating the office building of the Tehsonglang village organisation (VO) in Photjaud village, 15 km from Mawkyrwat, in South West Khasi Hills.
The office building was constructed by the VO in collaboration with Photjaud VEC through the MGNREGS scheme, with contribution worth Rs 5 lakh from Tehsonglang VO.  Tehsonglang VO, which was formed on October 17, 2017, consists of 18 self help groups.
Tongkhar expressed happiness to see the upliftment of women in society, especially that the Self Help Groups (SHGs) and VOs, which have become banks that give out loans to the general public. He also asked the SHGs and VOs to ask for experience certificates because nobody knows that one day our SHGs or VOs might involve in big business.
Shunning superstition, Tongkhar asked the people to avoid believing anything baseless. “We should not be misled by people that say it is useless to send children to school because we could not get government jobs. This is wrong and you should know that the works done by an educated person is different from the work of illiterate people,” Tongkhar said.
