Two Indian workers die in Maldives explosion
Male, Oct 22: Two Indian workers were killed in a powerful explosion near a fish market on Haa Dhaal Makunudhoo island in the Maldives, the Indian mission here said on Sunday. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident on Haa Dhaal Makunudhoo island in which two Indian nationals have lost their lives,” the High Commission of India in Maldives said in a post on X. It said the mission is in “close contact” with the Maldivian authorities as well as the families of the victims. Citing a resident, the Sun Online news website reported that the explosion took place near the fish market, located at the southern end of the island’s harbour, at around 04:15 pm on Saturday. Preliminary investigative findings show the explosion was caused by a gas cylinder near Kamunudhoo’s fish market, a police spokesperson was quoted as saying. The victims were workers employed by the contractor for the land reclamation project to build an airport on the island, it said, without identifying their nationalities. (PTI)

 

Detroit synagogue prez fatally stabbed
Detroit, Oct 22: A Detroit synagogue president was found stabbed to death outside her home Saturday, police said. The motive wasn’t known. Emergency medical personnel declared the woman, identified in a statement from Mayor Mike Duggan as Samantha Woll, dead at the scene, Cpl. Dan Donakowski said. “While at the scene, police officers observed a trail of blood leading officers to the victim’s residence, which is where the crime is believed to have occurred,” Donakowski said. Woll, 40, had led the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue since 2022 and was a former aide to Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin and campaign staffer for Attorney General Dana Nessel, the Detroit Free Press reported. Police have not identified a possible motive and are investigating, the Free Press reported.. Another death linked to storm
London, Oct 22: Police said Sunday that a fourth person has died in Britain during a storm that pounded the UK and northern Europe with gale-force winds and torrential rain. Derbyshire Police said a woman in her 80s was found dead at a home in Chesterfield, central England. Her death was being linked to flooding in the area. In nearby Derby, the River Derwent reached its highest-ever recorded level on Saturday during a storm that brought 8 inches (200 mm) of rain to parts of Britain. (AP)
