Indo-Canadian man fined $20K in immigration fraud case
Toronto, Oct 25: An Indian-origin man has been fined $20,000 for his role in a scheme that charged newcomers tens of thousands for permits to work in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Avtar Singh Sohi, 42, pleaded guilty on Monday to misrepresentation under the Canada Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, the CBC News channel reported. The Provincial Court of Manitoba heard that Avtar provided a woman with pay stubs to show she was working for him as a nanny from March 2019 to July 2021 while she was illegally employed elsewhere. In addition, he also provided her with a number of signed documents that she used as part of her permanent residency application. The woman, an Indian national, came to Canada on a Labour Market Impact Assessment, which is issued after a need for a temporary foreign worker is demonstrated because there is no citizen or permanent resident available to do the job. Avtar, a father of two children, has been living in Canada since 2006. (IANS)

Superfog leaves
eight dead, 63 injured in US
Washington, Oct 25: The death toll from a massive car wreck has increased to eight with 63 others injured due to a “superfog” of smoke from marsh fires in the US state of Louisiana and dense morning fog, authorities said. The authorities revealed the death toll on Tuesday night, reports Xinhua news agency. The National Weather Service said there were multiple wetland fires in the region on Monday and smoke from the fires mixed with fog to create a “superfog,” resulting in extremely poor visibility. As many as 168 vehicles were involved in the series of crashes leading to a mile-long fiery pileup, the Louisiana State Police said. Witnesses initially reported two deaths from a box truck that slid underneath an 18-wheeler. (IANS)
