SHILLONG, Oct 26: In the run-up to the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, political parties in the state have begun their exercises but the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which contested the last Assembly elections aggressively, remains notably silent.
Sources have revealed that state leaders have sought information from the party’s central leadership regarding their plans for the Lok Sabha polls.
However, the central leadership continues to remain tightlipped.
There is speculation about whether the TMC might refrain from fielding candidates in Shillong and Tura, potentially supporting the ‘INDIA’ alliance candidates, as various opposition parties, including the Congress, have united to challenge the BJP-led alliance at the national level.
When asked about the TMC’s presence in Meghalaya, sources indicated that state leaders are still in contact with the party’s state general secretary, but any decision regarding contesting elections would need to come from the party’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee.
Despite the TMC’s reduced activity in the state after losing the recent elections, sources have refuted claims that their office is no longer operational.
Amidst the uncertain political future of the TMC in the state, speculations are also rife that some of their leaders are already in talks with other political parties to turncoat in the near future.
The TMC in this year’s Assembly election had contested all the 60 seats but the party could only manage to win five seats.
