NONGPOH, Oct 31: Recent findings indicate that the Byrnihat area has been recognised as the most polluted urban city in India, surpassing even the national capital, New Delhi, and various other major metropolises and cities. This unsettling assessment is based on data provided by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), which reported an alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) of 302 on October 25, 2023.
Expressing profound concern for the well-being of the local populace, the Khasi Students’ Union, North Khasi Hills District Unit (KSU NKHD), has taken a decisive stance on this pressing matter.
KSU NKHD president Ferdynald Kharkamni underscored the gravity of the situation, highlighting the distressing quality of air that the residents are compelled to breathe. In response, Kharkamni announced the Union’s imminent plans to convene a meeting with the community leaders of Byrnihat to address this critical issue.
Moreover, the Union has outlined its intention to engage with the Assam government, seeking their intervention to mitigate the pollution emanating from industrial activities on the Assam side of Byrnihat.
It is noteworthy that the Meghalaya side of Byrnihat accommodates residential areas, which stands in contrast to the Assam side’s lack of residential settlements.
