SHILLONG, Nov 4: Nineteen-year-old Devyani Singh, the daughter of Poonam Singh who was allegedly stabbed by her husband Suresh Singh on Friday, has opened up about her apprehensions on the role of the police investigating the case, while calling for the case to be handled by someone who is out of her father’s influence.
Informing that her father is the Director of the Shillong Club, Shillong Golf Club and secretary of the Rotary Club, the 19-year-old said that the police, investigating the case, are doing too little, too late; even going to the extent of trying to persuade her to not pursue the case.
She alleged that her father, who had fled after stabbing her mother, broke into the house the next day, and as she hid herself behind the car, she immediately informed the police. However, the officer who answered the phone said he needed a form written by the Officer in-charge to take any action, she claimed.
She said she then frantically made calls to the Laban Officer-in-Charge, N Khan, who did not answer at all nor did the police arrive at the scene. Later that evening, when she went to the Laban Police Station, the OC was allegedly attempting to persuade her to not pursue the case.
She also provided an audio recording of her conversation with the OC.
Stating that she is the eye witness to the stabbing of her mother by her father, Devyani said, “Police registered an FIR under wrong sections and are now trying to protect him”.
The victim, Poonam Singh, is currently in the ICU of Shillong Civil Hospital.
Recalling that many FIRs were filed earlier including one of the recent cases wherein her father allegedly injured her mother’s hand, 19-year-old Devyani said if the police were pro-active and had acted, perhaps the situation would not have come to what it is currently.
