State-level science congress concludes

SHILLONG, Nov 10: The two-day ‘State-Level Children Science Congress’ jointly organised by State Council of Science, Technology & Environment (SCSTE), Meghalaya and Science Department, Shillong College concluded at the Shillong College Auditorium, on Thursday.
Supported and catalyzed by NCSTC, DST, Government of India the programme under the theme, ‘Understanding Ecosystem for Health and Wellbeing’, has been organised as part of the 31st National Children’s Science Congress as well as one of the events to mark the diamond jubilee celebration of Teaching Science in Shillong College.
IAS, Director of the Directorate of School Education and Literacy, S Tembe graced the inaugural function as the chief guest where in his speech, he encouraged all the participants that participation is more important than winning.
Students who made it to the top 20 merit list of MBoSE SSLC Examination 2023, Hanika Barim of Mynken Christian Hr. Sec. School, Bhoirymbong, Jessica Marwein of St. Ferrando Sec. School, Sawsymper and Albin L Marshillong of St. Joseph Hr. Sec. School, Nongkasen were also felicitated with cash prize and a memento during the programme.
The toppers had enrolled in the free crash tuition in mathematics and science for the board examination organised by SCSTE at 130 centres across the states.
Out of the 64 selected project teams shortlisted from all the 12 districts, eight projects have been selected to represent the state at the national level to be held in December. The eight projects selected included three teams from the junior category and five teams from the senior category.
Selected school and project title from the junior category are St Francis De Sales, Umwahlang, West Khasi Hills on ‘Development Of local liquid Fuel’, Mawrong Govertment UPS, Ri-Bhoi on ‘Organic Ointment for Multiporpose Treatment’ and Sacred Heart HSS, Williamnagar, East Garo Hills on ‘Artocarpus Heterophyllus as a healthy fruit juice’ while from the senior category are Jirang Govt Hr. Sec. School on ‘Uses of Biochar as a Natural fertilizer’, Rev. JJM Nichols-Roy Sec School on ‘(Wah Umtung) Studying the colour of the river and specifically to conduct the test if the water is fit for human consumption’, North Liberty Higher Secondary School on ‘Study and understanding the effects
of plastics in our local area’, Shillong Public School on ‘Computing carrying capacity of earthworms under different feeds’ and St Dominic Savio SS, SWGH on ‘Use of packet food increase plastic waste and promotes junk food, health of school children a matter of concern’.
Others who spoke at the inaugural programme were principal of Shillong College E Kharkongor, and Retd. Assistant Project Director, S&T Cell, Planning Department, A S Suting.
