Indian scientist bags Society of Neuroscience’s award Washington, Nov 10: Abhilasha Joshi, an Indian neuroscientist was awarded the Early Career Award by the Society of Neuroscience, which recognises young neuroscientists for outstanding research and educational pursuit in an international setting. Joshi, currently a visiting researcher at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown in Lisbon, Portugal, was awarded the Peter and Patricia Gruber International Research Award by the society, according to an official press release. The award, supported by The Gruber Foundation, includes a USD 25,000 prize and travel to the Society of Neuroscience (SfN) annual meeting here this week. Its announcement last month highlighted Joshi’s work on the ties between locomotion and memory in rodents, which has implications for a better understanding of the links between cognitive and motor deficits in healthy ageing and ageing-associated disorders. Two other researchers, along with Joshi, were announced as the awardees. (PTI)

 

Food bank in Canada closes its doors to int’l students Toronto, Nov 10: Failing to meet an overwhelming demand for supplies, a food bank in the Canadian province of Ontario has said it is closing its door to international students. Brampton-based Ste Louise Outreach Centre of Peel said it cannot provide enough food and other supplies to its customers as the number of foreign students turning up at the outlet has been soaring since September. A food bank is a charitable organisation that collects safe, nutritious food, and redistributes it to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. The Daily Bread Food Bank’s most recent annual report, found a 63 per cent year-over-year increase in use from July 2022 to June 2023. (IANS)

 

Poliovirus detected in Pakistan Islamabad, Nov 10: Amid signs that Pakistan was close to eradicating polio, a top laboratory for the eradication of the disease here has confirmed the detection of a strain of poliovirus in nine samples collected from across five cities, a media report said on Friday. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two remaining polio-endemic countries. The samples included four from Karachi in Sindh province, two from Chaman in Balochistan province and one each from Peshawar, Kohat and Nowshera in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. (PTI)
