Sikh man, son gunned down
Toronto, Nov 11: A Sikh man and his 11-year-old son were gunned down in a targeted shooting in the Canadian city of Edmonton. Harpreet Singh Uppal, 41, and his son were shot dead in broad daylight in their vehicle on Thursday outside a gas station at a shopping plaza. Edmonton Police said both the victims succumbed to their injuries on the scene. Another boy, who was in the vehicle, survived. Police said Uppal was a member of a gang known as Brothers Keepers and killing is linked to the rival UN gang. He had survived an attempt on his life in October 2021 when a lone gunman fired multiple shots at him while he was having dinner with his family at a pizza shop. Police said Uppal was “followed with the intention of finding him and ending his life. And it happened”. (IANS) “With the young boy, his son, we don’t know yet … that he was targeted in that sense. But what we do know, and sadly, is that once the shooter or the shooters learned that the son was there, (they) intentionally killed him. Shot and killed him. So he was not caught in a crossfire or killed by mistake.” The victim was jailed for 15 months in 2013 for possession of unauthorised arms. He was also facing a trial next April on charges of cocaine possession and trafficking. (IANS)

Major terror bid foiled in Pakistan
Lahore, Nov 11: Pakistani counter-terrorism officials on Saturday claimed to have foiled a major terror plot to target key installations in the Punjab province by arresting five suspected terrorists from banned terror outfits. The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of the Punjab police said it conducted 179 intelligence-based operations in different districts of the province this week, in which five terrorists were arrested. The CTD said that it foiled a major terror plot by arresting the terrorists linked to the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) militant groups as the militants had planned sabotage across the province and wanted to target important installations. “The arrest of these terrorists was carried out during intelligence-based operations in Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Bahawalpur and Rawalpindi,” the CTD said in a statement. Around half a kg of explosives, two hand grenades, 2 IED bombs, five detonators, 13 feet of safety fuse wire, 3.5 feet of prima cards and banned literature were recovered. (PTI)

Powerful aftershock rocks
Jakarta, Nov 11: A massive aftershock measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia’s eastern province of Maluku on Saturday, but did not cause a tsunami, the country’s meteorology bureau said. The aftershock with its epicentre on the seabed, jolted the province at 3.45 a.m., Xinhua news agency quoted the bureau as saying. The epicenter was at 249 km northwest of Maluku Tenggara Barat (Tanimbar Islands) district with a depth of 10 km, according to the bureau. Three more moderate aftershocks were also recorded with magnitudes of 5.3 and 5.2, the meteorology bureau said, citing that several other quakes with weak strength have also occurred since midnight. The officials of the agency did not issue a tsunami warning as the tremors did not have the potential to trigger giant waves. A 7.1-magnitude main shock jolted off Maluku province on Wednesday.
