Shillong, Nov 18: City is set to host the 1st Meghalaya International GM Open 2023, organized by the Meghalaya Chess Association, taking place from December 12 to December 20 at the SAI STC Indoor Sports Stadium. The inaugural edition promises an exciting chess spectacle, featuring a substantial total cash prize fund of ₹3,001,000, with the top prize amounting to ₹301,000.
Category A, with a total of 82 prizes, including 40 main prizes, is open to rated players, offering a competitive platform for seasoned chess enthusiasts.
Entry is free for Grandmasters (GMs), International Masters (IMs), Women Grandmasters (WGMs), and Women International Masters (WIMs), ensuring a diverse and high-level participation.
Meanwhile, Category B, catering to players rated 1599 and below, boasts a total prize fund of ₹1,001,000, with the first prize set at ₹100,000. The tournament structure comprises ten rounds, employing the Swiss League format.
The time control for each game is 90 minutes with a 30-second increment from move no.1, while the default time is set at 30 minutes.
Notably, players are restricted from agreeing to a draw before the 30th move made by black, adding an element of strategic depth to the competition.
